This video is showing the speed performance potential of the new solvent-wash AFP™-R plate during plate making production compared to a conventional photopolymer plate. The speed difference was established at a test site and we like to mention that the total processing time is very much depending on the customer solvent type used.

Technology concept

The principal photopolymer raw plate development difference between a standard solvent wash and AFP™-R plate is the different particle size and type.

Very much like with good chocolate, there are different flavors and chocolate properties. Imagine a standard milk chocolate compared to puffed rice chocolate. For our plate the comparison it is the same! The polymer of a conventional plate chemistry needs to completely dissolve inside the solvent which takes time. For the AFP™-R polymer, only the polymer part of the plate is dissolved, the other component parts will be washed away as small particles, speeding up the washout process

As the AFP™-R plate uses less polymer to be processed by the solvent washer, also the plate washout speed is increased.
Faster plate processing speed also means much faster plate drying as the plate is in contact with the solvent for a shorter time, resulting in less plate swelling.

Solvent wash platemaking systems currently have an approximate 70% market share. From an environmental perspective, the idea is to switch to water-wash plates. But many companies are not ready to make that investment.

Asahi Photoproducts introduces a unique bridging technology with AFP™-R CleanPrint reduced solvent plates to help flexo platemakers along the Road to Solvent ZERO. Enjoy up to 30% reduction in solvent use and up to 50% reduction in energy usage, along with higher quality and faster plate production.
As it can be seen in the graph below, the plate processing times can be drastically reduced. This drying time reduction is depending on the type of solvent used. In the below case the reduction in plate drying is from 120 min to 60 min.

AFP™-R is a solvent washable plate with a reduced environmental impact and improved pre-press and press productivity. This is another milestone in our sustainability journey, reinforcing our dedication to continuously improving product development in balance with the environment. The first plate is a hard flexo plate for high quality flexible packaging, label and paper applications, featuring several improvements when compared to a standard solvent wash plate.
Many of our clients are not quite ready to invest in solvent-free flexo platemaking. But they love the idea of being able to reduce solvent usage without needing to invest in new hardware or software. Asahi’s AFP™-R reduced solvent flexo plates are the best option to help these clients as they travel the Road to Solvent ZERO.
